Track 6: Hook, Line, and Sinker
This is another one of my favorite songs that I've written. It's so simple, but I feel like it works really well.

I remember sitting in my studio, listening to music for a couple of hours, when I thought to myself "I really want to write something that's instantly catchy, like 'hook - hook - line and sinker' *sings the chorus to myself*. The melody instantly came to me. I had to grab my phone and record it so I didn't forget it, then I grabbed my guitar and figured out what chords worked for it.

For a few weeks prior to writing the song, I kept coming back to the line "Hook, Line, and Sinker". (Definition: Used to emphasize that someone has been completely deceived or tricked) so I was stoked to use that as one of the lines. Though my favorite lyric from the song is the opening line "Am I the bait - or am I just a lousy catch?". It sets the tone for the rest of the song perfectly.

I sometimes like to have songs musically contradict the lyrical content. Sure, it can be nice to have an aggressive song with angry lyrics, but I sometimes find it more compelling to write something catchy as fuck - but have a darker lyrical tone to it.

I had my good friend Tony Smith feature on vocals in this one and I absolutely love the parts he put to it. I sent him the song and said, "See what you can come up with for this verse".
When we sat down together with acoustic guitars and I heard the part he came up with I was so stoked with how it added to the song.
